Q: Can I buy just about anything at the markets or stores?
A:
The selection will be smaller than what you may have at home, but staples and non-exotic foods are readily available.
Many guests bring some of their own favorite food items.
Q: Is it better to bring
my own liquor or buy it there?
A: A new, large, well-stocked liquor store recently
opened on Exuma with competitive prices comparable to what you would find in the States, so why carry the heavy stuff if you
don't have to?
Q: Are condiments, toilet paper, trash bags, paper towels, dishwasher
soap, laundry soap, bath soap, etc. supplied with the house?
A: No, this is a self-catering
accomodation. Of course, some toilet paper will be there upon arrival, but most people go to the market as soon as possible.
If your plane arrives at night after the stores are closed, arrangements can be made to have staples (milk, bread, water,
etc.) brought in for you by the caretaker for a small fee.
Q: Can you drink the tap
water?
A: You can, but it does have a slightly salty taste to it. We drink bottled
water and brush our teeth and cook with the tap water.
Q: Are the stores
open on Sunday?
A. The larger grocery store in Georgetown is open half day on Sundays.
Q: Can I barbecue there?
A: There is a charcoal
grill and also a gas grill located waterside next to several picnic tables. You must supply your own charcoal or replenish
the propane. It's a great place to entertain and dine!
Q:
Are beach towels supplied?
A: Each bedroom has two beach towels. Also supplied are
two sets of bath towels for each bedroom and of course all necessary sheets and linens.
Q:
Is there a hair-dryer at the house?
A: There is one hair-dryer at the house.
There is also an iron and an ironing board.
Q: What is the waterfront/beach
like?
A: Water's Edge is located waterside on a large, shallow bay.
Q: Can I walk along the water?
A: Other than sandy areas at the cabana,
beach, and dock area, the waterfront is mostly rock, so yes, but shoes would be required. There are flood plains nearby,
which are fun to walk to, also an inland blue hole with an underwater cave, within easy walking distance. On the
other side of the Island you can walk for miles along the shore on many sandy, deserted beaches.
Q:
What is the swimming like?
A: Because it is a shallow bay, swimming is best at high tide.
At low tide the water is very shallow. I enjoy swimming there every day at high tide. Many people like to swim
on the east side of the island (just minutes away) where there are many large, sandy, beaches with small waves.
Q: Is it safe to swim in the ocean at Water's Edge?
A: I swim every single
day in the clear and calm water, and haven't been eaten by anything yet!
Q:
How far away are these deserted beaches?
A. The closest one is about two miles (approx 5
minutes) away.
Q: What is the water temperature like?
A:
The water is definitely warmer on our side of the island. But regardless, one can usually swim year-round.
Q: Can I kayak right from Water's Edge?
A:
Yes, the calm, clear water in the bay is very favorable for kayaking.
Q:
Are kayaks included?
A: One tandem Emotion kayak is included. However, if you elect
to use it, you are responsible for any damage or missing paddles, etc. while under your control.
Q: Can I rent a boat and use the dock at Water's Edge?
A: The only boat
rental business on Exuma is on the east side of the island near Georgetown, and they will not let you take their boat very
far, due to the shallow waters and many reefs.
Q: Can I bring my own boat to
Water's Edge?
A: Yes, but it must not exceed 20 feet. Boats longer than that must have
prior approval to moor or dock at our location.
Q: How can I find the nice beaches?
A:
There is a guide at the house that will help you find interesting places, beautiful beaches, great restaurants, etc.
Q: How's the fishing?
A: Excellent! We are on the "fishing"
side of the island. You can have a local guide pick you up right at our dock. Or take our kayak out and use it
as your fishing platform. When I was there in April, 2010, a friend of mine caught a small barracuda while fly-fishing
off the shoreline!
Q: Is the swimming pool heated?
A:
No, it's not necessary to heat the pool. It maintains a very pleasant temperature year-round on its own.
Q: Is the swimming pool private?
A: The pool is shared with the other
homes in the small development. HOWEVER, there are only ten other homes in this small neighborhood, and of those homes,
most are owned by absentee owners who are very rarely here, or by other homeowners who work on Exuma.
Q: What is the beach like?
A: There is a very nice sandy beach next to the
swimming pool and the waterfront that has hammocks, chairs, loungers, and shade umbrellas. Take a look at the aerial
photo on the "Contact Us" page for a better look.
Q: Are there restaurants
close by?
A: Yes, one advantage of our location is its proximity to restaurants and stores
without being in the middle of busy Georgetown.
Q: Can I see the water
from inside the house?
A: We have let the beautiful and lush vegetation fill in around the
house to ensure one's privacy, so while we are just feet from the water, a view of the water is only available from rooms
located on the front side of the house.
Q: Are there a lot of bugs?!
A:
The sandflies come out at dawn and dusk for a short while. The developer consistently works very diligently to eradicate
the mosquitoes, so you won't have a big mosquito problem while at our house, but be prepared when you leave our neighborhood
and bring your bug spray. You are, after all, in a tropical country!
Q:
Can I buy bug spray there?
A: You can, but it will cost two to three times more. Bring
some with you for when you go out exploring!
Q: Why is there no price difference
between high season and low season?
A: Because the electric bill is much higher during the
off-peak (summer) season, thereby making the house more expensive to support.
Q:
Will my cell phone work in the Bahamas?
A: My cell phone has reliable and clear reception
through Verizon. Of course there are roaming charges when using it. I can't say about other carriers, though.
Q: How can I call home while I'm there?
A: By purchasing an
international telephone calling card and using it to make calls from the telephone at our house.
Q:
Is there an internet connection at the house?
A: There is an internet connection for anyone's
use at the Cabana. I usually can access this from inside the house. The Bahamian telephone company, though, is
not the most reliable. Sometimes the connection will be fine, other times it will be out for 2 days.
Q:
Do I need a rental car to get around Exuma?
A: Most definitely! Exuma is a very long,
but narrow island with one main paved road running the entire length of it. There are so many places to see and beaches
to explore, you would miss out on a lot if you didn't have use of an automobile. We have made special arrangements to
get a substantial discount on rental cars for our guests.
